Acrylic paint, known for its quick drying time, is a water-based medium. It offers versatility, allowing for different application methods ranging from delicate washes to thicker layers. Additionally, it can be combined with other mediums to create diverse textures and effects.
Enhance the realism of your paint by numbers artwork with the following techniques: The ones you choose to use will depend on your unique painting style and desired artistic effect. Don't hesitate to experiment with various techniques to find the ones that best suit your paint by numbers style.
Let's start with a commonly asked question when beginning acrylic painting:
Water can be added to acrylic paint to increase its fluidity, making it easier to work with. This can be particularly helpful for beginners who are still honing their brush control skills. Using water can also create a more translucent effect, allowing the underlying layers to shine through. However, it's essential to avoid excessive water as it may dilute the paint excessively, making it challenging to achieve vibrant colors and complete coverage of the numbered areas on your canvas.
On the other hand, using undiluted acrylic paint directly from the pot produces an opaque effect with vivid colors. This technique is particularly useful for creating textured effects where the paint is applied thickly and allowed to dry in layers. Please note that thicker layers of paint will definitely more effectively cover the numbered areas on your paint by numbers canvas.
The blending technique involves seamlessly merging two colors to create smooth and gradual transitions.
There are two primary blending methods in acrylic painting that you can apply when creating your paint by numbers: wet-on-wet blending and dry-on-wet blending.
To achieve this effect, apply a line of color on each side of the area where you want to create a gradient effect. Then, use a dry brush to blend the colors back and forth. This technique produces a soft and subtle gradient effect that can be used to create seamless transitions between colors.
For this method, apply two different colors side by side. Then, use a wet brush to blend the colors together. This can be done using circular motions or a sweeping motion. This technique creates a smoother and more uniform gradient effect.
The blending technique in acrylic painting is beneficial for a variety of painting projects. It can be used to create soft backgrounds, color gradients, light and shadow effects, or simply to add texture and depth to your artwork.
By using blending techniques, you can also achieve light and shadow effects in your artwork. For example, you can use a lighter color to create a smooth transition between bright and shaded areas, giving your painting a sense of depth and realism.
You can also create a gradient effect using a sponge. First, apply the base color to your canvas, then dip a sponge into the color you want for the gradient. Stamp the sponge on the canvas, creating a line of color. Next, dab the area between the base color and the line of color you created. This technique produces a soft and subtle gradient effect that can be used for delicate color transitions.
The layering technique is a commonly used method in acrylic painting to add depth, texture, and complexity to any artwork. It involves applying multiple layers of paint that will create unique visual effects on your paint by numbers.
Simply apply a layer of paint, allowing it to dry completely, before adding a new layer with different colors. Repeat this process as needed to achieve the desired effect.
One of the primary purposes of using the layering technique is to create shadows and reflections. By layering different colors, you can achieve deeper tones and subtle shades. For instance, to create a shadow, apply a layer of dark paint and then add successive layers of lighter colors to create a gradient effect.
It's crucial to ensure that each layer of paint dries completely before applying a new one. Applying paint to a wet layer can result in smudges and blotches on your artwork.
The glazing technique involves applying a thin layer of transparent paint over a dry layer of paint to create light and depth effects.
To create a glaze, dilute your acrylic paint with water or a transparent acrylic medium. Apply a thin layer of diluted paint over a dry layer of paint. You can repeat this process with multiple glaze layers as necessary to achieve the desired effect.
Glazes can be used to create various effects, including shadows, reflections, and light effects. By using translucent glaze layers, you can achieve depth and transparency effects that are difficult to attain with other acrylic painting techniques.
Glazes can also intensify colors or create subtle variations. Applying a complementary glaze layer over a dry layer of paint can enhance brightness and intensity, surpassing what a single layer of paint can achieve.
Make sure to let each glaze layer dry completely before adding a new layer.
The impasto technique involves applying thick paint to create texture and relief effects in your paint by numbers artwork.
Impastos are created using a wide, thick brush loaded with a generous amount of acrylic paint. Apply the paint to the canvas using short, quick brushstrokes, resulting in a rough surface texture. Impastos are often used to infuse movement into artwork or create interesting surface textures.
This technique is suitable for various paint by numbers projects, including landscapes, still life, and portraits. Impastos can be used to create light and shadow effects, add depth and texture to landscapes, or depict material effects in still life paintings. Additionally, they can add dimension to portraits by creating intriguing surface textures. Used alone or in combination with other acrylic painting techniques, impastos will help you achieve a wide range of visual effects. For example, they can be combined with glazes to create subtle light effects or blended with blending techniques for smooth color transitions.
The choice of colors for impastos depends on the project and desired effect. Warm colors can convey movement and warmth, while cool colors can create a calmer and more serene atmosphere. Bright and vibrant colors are effective for light and shadow effects, while darker hues can establish a sense of depth and mystery.

The wrinkles on canvas are quite normal, especially after a shipment of rolled or folded canvas.
Fortunately, just like the wrinkles on clothes coming out of the dryer, you can use your iron!
- Ironing the canvas before applying the paint!
- Flip the canvas to iron with the iron against the back of it.
- Gradually increase the temperature of your iron without ever reaching Lin / Cotton (Canvases are usually linen, but the surface to be painted on has a special treatment as well as an impression of numbered areas).
Be careful with the temperature of your iron!
If you paint a single color at a time, while making sure to close the jars between each application on the canvas, you will avoid exposing the paints to the air too long and you will avoid drying your paint prematurely.
Before opening paint pots, there is no risk, everything is arranged so that the paint is still fresh when it arrives in your hands.
However after opening, in case of prolonged exposure to air and therefore in case of partial drying of the pots, do not panic! We have the solution !
These paints are acrylic, so you can also use a little water or for even more efficiency, professional acrylic fluids.
The Zig Zag technique is an advanced technique for professional paint by number painters.
The basic concept is to blur the transition areas between each color area for a more natural and realistic look. Indeed we must not forget that the numbered areas are there to guide you, but it is not mandatory to follow them!
Painting is Art, and therefore there are no rules! Express your creativity, and with practice, think outside the box to improve your work with some personal touches.
This is the idea:
Initial step:
Paint by numbers, trying to get a smooth look, without strokes, and with a relatively thin layer of paint. Do not panic if the numbers are still visible through the painting, because additional layers are expected to get the final result.
Final step:
Follow the Zig Zag method on transition areas to create realistic and breathtaking gradients!
The purpose of the maneuver is to blur a transition zones between two colors, by painting a Zig Zag shape, crossing both colors. In the example introduction of the video, it’s a test with green and brown. We begin with brown oblique brush strokes on the green zone, then continue with oblique but opposite green brushstrokes, towards the brown zone. Using a clean brush, it is then a question of "mixing" the zone of Zig Zag delicately in order to gradually create a beautiful blurring. Be careful never to fade through your own brush, too far from the Zig Zag area. Clean your brush regularly with a piece of fabric during this phase of shading for an even more precise result.
Congratulations, you are now a confirmed painter who knows how to master beautiful gradients! Like any discipline of Art, good results come with training and time. No need to rush thinking about the results, focusing only on your final canvas. You may not appreciate the moment, won’t be satisfied with your work, and therefore waste your time. Focus on the process of painting, acquiring technique, and experience, rather than on the outcome. If you apply yourself and take your time, you will always be satisfied with the incredible result of your hard work.

Canvas painting has been highly esteemed for centuries! From exploring artistic movements like impressionism and cubism to experimenting with various painting techniques, it enables artists to freely express themselves and create distinctive and personal works of art.
When you start painting on canvas, it's natural to feel a bit daunted by all the techniques, available accessories, and plethora of artistic styles. Where should you begin? What tools do you need? With a few helpful tips and a touch of patience, you can swiftly embark on creating art that you'll be proud of!
Canvas as a painting support dates back to around the 13th century, when artists began experimenting with this innovative medium. Canvas rose in popularity during the Renaissance, a time when artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Jan Van Eyck began crafting masterpieces on canvas. Since then, many iconic artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Monet have left their mark on art history with their now-renowned works.
Embarking on canvas painting as a beginner artist is an exhilarating and gratifying experience. Nevertheless, it's crucial to choose the right medium to facilitate learning and mastering basic techniques. Acrylic paint is recommended for beginners, as it dries rapidly and is easy to work with. It also provides a broad range of colors and textures and can be diluted with water to create effects akin to those of oil paint or gouache.
Conversely, oil paint is traditionally used on canvas due to its vibrant colors and slow drying time. However, it necessitates the use of specific solvents and mediums, making its application more intricate for beginners. As a result, we suggest that novice artists start experimenting with oil painting once they've gained some experience with acrylic paint.
Gouache, a water-based paint, yields a matte and opaque finish. Nevertheless, it is less popular than oil or acrylic paints because of its less radiant appearance and consistency, which can be more challenging for beginners to work with.
For each of the aforementioned mediums, as a beginner, it's vital to become proficient with the fundamentals before progressing to more complex approaches. Additionally, consider the composition of your artwork, as it plays a crucial role in the final piece, and canvas painting is no exception.
Ultimately, practice is essential for refining your canvas painting skills and cultivating a unique style. Experiment with various styles, colors, and subjects to discover what excites and inspires you.

Landscape painting traces its origins back to ancient times, but it truly flourished as a distinct genre during the Renaissance, with renowned artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Dürer. Throughout the centuries, landscape painting has evolved, incorporating new techniques and reflecting the cultural and social concerns of each era.
Artistic movements have played a vital role in shaping the landscape painting genre. For instance, during the 18th and 19th centuries, Romanticism focused on the sublime beauty and grandeur of nature, often portraying dramatic elements like mountains and storms. Impressionism, headed by renowned artists such as Claude Monet in the 19th century, strove to capture the essence of landscapes through quick brushstrokes and vibrant colors, depicting the ever-changing light and atmosphere. Later on, Post-Impressionists like Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne explored innovative painting techniques to express their personal vision of landscapes, experimenting with forms, colors, and textures.
One of the primary reasons we are drawn to landscape painting is its ability to establish a deep connection with nature. Painted landscapes serve as reminders of the beauty and diversity that surround us, inviting us to pause and appreciate the wonders of the natural world.

It offers an approach of relaxation and finding moments of tranquillity, providing a respite from the stress and problems of our daily lives. Studying landscape paintings throughout history allows us to delve deeper into our own history and the evolution of our relationship with nature.
The aforementioned artists, as well as their contemporaries, have used a variety of approaches to depict landscapes, depending on their style, skills, and preferences. First and foremost, composition is critical in producing a balanced and harmonious landscape by using standards such as the rule of thirds, perspective, or other guiding principles for arranging elements on the canvas. The pop art movement, which began in the 1950s in the United Kingdom and subsequently spread to the United States, tried to incorporate popular culture into the realm of art by using images and items from ordinary life as the subjects of its works. Influenced by previous artistic movements, particularly Dadaism and Surrealism, which also investigated the use of common things in their art, pop art had a huge impact on contemporary art and popular culture in general, and continues to influence artists worldwide.
The use of bright colors and repeated patterns, as well as the desire to create works with a strong visual presence, characterize pop art painting. Andy Warhol, best known for his paintings of Campbell's soup cans and portraits of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, has become a key artist in contemporary art and is regarded as the movement's pioneer.
The "Campbell's Soup Cans," a series of paintings produced by the American artist in 1962, consists of 32 paintings, each representing a different canned soup from the Campbell's brand. The only difference between the paintings is the type of soup depicted on each panel. Why paint this topic, you might wonder? This series represents a critique of American consumption society, and as you might expect, it has provoked considerable controversy about its artistic merit. Regardless, it has since been recognized as one of the most important works of modern art.
Although the compositions of the paintings are similar, Warhol used bright colors for some varieties of soup, while others were painted in more subdued tones. He also employed several approaches to depict the labels on each container.
Pop artists also embraced mass reproduction techniques, such as serigraphs, offset prints, and engraving techniques, to make art more accessible to the general population.
Pop art had a huge influence on modern art and popular culture in general. Many contemporary artists, as well as advertising, music, and fashion, were influenced by it. By using popular images to create works of art accessible to all, this movement rejected the assumption that art had to be serious and reserved for an intellectual elite. This democratization of art made it more accessible to new audiences.
Do you want to incorporate pop art into your paintings? Pop art not only embraces popular culture icons and symbols, which are sometimes overlooked by more traditional kinds of art, but also colorful animals. So why not paint your pop art dog by number?
Your pop art paint by number will reflect your playful and joyful attitude with its vibrant colors! What a better way to talk about paint by numbers than to interview one of our customers, Robert Lafferty! As you surely know if you are already a Figured'Art client, we like to stay in touch with you to answer all your questions and constantly improve our paint by numbers kits.
Robert has been a loyal customer since 2020. We like to talk regularly as he gives us his feedback on our paint by numbers kits.
Robert has completed more than 50 paint by numbers, his advice and recommendations for getting started with paint by numbers are worth their weight in gold!
Robert Lafferty discovered paint by numbers in 2015 following an accident (broken ankle). Having to stay immobilized, his wife bought him 2 small format paint by numbers to keep him occupied and put him to work. He had never done any crafting hobbies before and found the experience very enjoyable although the choice was quite limited at the time.
Early 2020, when the Covid pandemic forced us all to review our habits and spend a good part of our time at home, Robert decided to focus on a creative manual activity.
Robert was impressed by the great diversity of designs on our website, clearly there was something for everyone.
"Whether it's paintings of animals, landscapes, flowers, or even famous paintings, Figured'Art has an exceptional choice. Not to mention the sizes and frame options. You can paint canvases from 16"x20" to 35"x47". And a very important point: the quality/price ratio of Figured'Art's paint by numbers kits is excellent.
At the start, I took my time with my new paint kits, but very quickly I became totally addicted to my new hobby and started painting every day.
When I finished my first paint by numbers canvas, I was blown away by the result, I couldn't believe it.
In one year, I completed more than 30 paint by numbers from Figured'Art. And I continued as the time went by.
The subjects I choose are very diverse, I take my time when choosing, and it must be said that there is a choice with more than 2000 designs available on figuredart.com.
Once my paint by numbers are finished, I have them framed by a local artisan and they are all hung in my house (which is increasingly resembling an Art museum :D).
I have shared my passion for paint by numbers with many of my acquaintances, family, pharmacist, the local grocery store and their employees to whom I have given some of my creations. They don't know my name but every time the same sentence comes back "Are you the painting Artist?" I get great satisfaction from being able to give some paintings to people, it makes life a little more beautiful.
At first, I started with "Easy" type paint by numbers canvases. An important point on the Figured'Art website is that you can filter their designs by level of difficulty. This is ideal for starting out under good conditions without discouraging yourself. Paint by numbers allows you to learn how to paint easily and you don't have to skip steps. If you have never painted in your life, take an easy canvas to start. After a few paintings, I started to produce detailed works.
I remember once unboxing a Figured'Art kit of a Cleopatra design and the canvas was at a remarkable level of details. I thought it was going to be impossible, but I'm definitely not one to give up! Art comes from the heart, and I let myself be carried away, almost in a trance in its realization, I was clearly elsewhere. When I saw the final result, I said to myself, "that's it, I can really paint any work, I am no longer afraid."
I then created a historical painting on the World War II period. The result was once again stunning. I posted some photos online and I was offered $300 from someone who wanted to buy it, but I refused because this painting has a special meaning to me.
In summary, I find that paint by numbers has all the qualities to please. It is a very relaxing creative hobby that removes stress from daily life. Perfect for improving concentration, I noticed a huge difference. And the excitement it brings when the work is completed is indescribable. Every day when I look at my paintings, I am proud of myself. There are many ways to discover Art and for me it was through paint by numbers.
I can only encourage you to try Figured’Art's paint by number kits and introduce them to your loved ones, you will be surprised by the result. And their customer service team is fantastic and quick in case of questions.
Everyone can try, young or retired. It's not difficult, you don't need painting skills to start, paint by numbers will be your guide. My wife and everyone who sees my works tell me that I have a real talent for an artist, and that makes me proud of what I have painted.

]]>We interviewed Mélanie Butruille, a Sophrologist in France, to talk about her occupation and the integration of painting by numbers in the therapies she offers.
In a world where well-being and health are fundamental, more and more people are turning to sophrology to work on their stress and improve their quality of life.
Sophrology allows to establish and/or reinforce the balance between emotions, thoughts and the body in order to improve the quality of life (stress management, emotion management, self-confidence, sleep disorders, etc.).
More than therapy, it is a training method that helps the person develop abilities they can use to better manage their daily life. Sophrology also helps prepare for an anxious event (exam, oral, driving license...), or assist a medical treatment (addictions, chemotherapy, surgical intervention...).
Many high-level artists and athletes also use it to manage their stress. It also helps pregnant women during pregnancy and during childbirth.
In addition to its therapeutic virtues, sophrology is an art of living. It can be part of a more global approach, for example, associated with sport, meditation, yoga... If sophrologists mainly use the voice as a support, and thus participate in a modification of the state of consciousness, sophrology is different from hypnosis. Indeed, it is part of a personal and more global approach, which privileges self-realization and autonomy.
During an individual session, the exchange with the person is the first step, perhaps the most important, because it allows me to know them, listen to them and understand their needs and expectations. Active listening is therefore the first method.
I then use breathing techniques, physical relaxation and visualization.
It is a technique that I use during group sessions. During this activity, the participants are freed from all resistance and they are able express themselves freely. This is an activity that allows them focus on something other than the daily stresses, take a step back on life and their anxieties, see things differently and exchange together in a positive way.
Before or after a sophrology session, I present a paint by numbers as a tool to achieve the same feeling of well-being and relaxation.
Residents of senior facilities often find themselves with a lot of "empty" time, which they spend dwelling on difficult moments, focusing on their pain, which keeps them in a deep sense of discomfort.
The activity of painting by numbers leads them to focus, and they can spend hours on their canvas and see a landscape that we imagined in the sophrology session appear right in front of them..
Their feedback is very positive, telling me that they don't think of anything, not even the time that's passing, allowing me a glimpse of a moment in their life: "I wasn't thinking of anything, just like when I gardened with my father", “the same feeling when I knitted sweaters for my children".
During this time out of time, they are more open, liberated, and tell me about thoughts and feelings they've kept bottled up for a long time.
We then display the paintings in the common room where families come to spend time with their loved ones. It is a pride for them to explain that they contributed to the results. One young woman in her twenties, who came to visit her grandmother, discovered the paintings and bought two for herself - a beautiful moment of transmission.
Teenagers tends to prefer modern paintings by numbers like the monkey wearing headphones or animals for example. I enjoyed working with them on the canvas of the kitten whose reflection in a puddle reveals a tiger. It is a beautiful metaphor that allowed us to approach self-confidence, the image of others on us, self-esteem...
Adults will prefer a painting that talks about a souvenir or a decoration for a specific room (where it will be useful).
Seniors will opt for a painting with a low level of difficulty so that the parts to be painted are large enough and will generally choose a colorful landscape.
A big thank you to Mélanie Butruille for this testimony.
To bring a real sentimental touch to your paint by numbers artwork, a great idea is to customize your paint by number canvas with a photo. Whether it's a person, an animal or a landscape, there are certain rules to follow to get the best results. Here are some tips to get a stunning custom paint by numbers canvas.
To keep the visual quality high, choosing the right resolution for your photo is very important. When your paint by numbers artwork, customized with your photo, is viewed from near or far, the final result should be optimal. The higher the resolution of the photo, the better the colors will appear on the canvas. This increases the accuracy of the details to give your paint by numbers canvas a finish very close to that of handmade paintings.
For a custom paint by numbers, you should ideally choose a photo with a uniform background. The advantage of this background is that the subject of your photo (your pet, a loved one or yourself, for example) is therefore very well emphasized. Also avoid displaying annoying visual elements at the edge of the canvas that could spoil the harmony and charm of your paint by numbers.
The graphic design of your custom paint by numbers kit is free! To produce your paint by numbers canvas, the uploaded photo will be transposed by our graphic designer into isolated areas to highlight the colors and details of the image. For best results, it is best to avoid group photos, which usually have many small blocks of color. The presence of details such as hands, heads or objects will not allow you to make the most realistic paint by numbers artwork possible.
The ideal photo for your custom paint by numbers should have large areas of color that are well differentiated from each other. You also need to ensure that you have excellent sharpness in each of these areas of the photo for your custom canvas number painting kit, and remember, good brightness and contrast are also necessary to achieve the optimum exposure for a pleasing visual effect.
The photo you choose for your custom paint by numbers canvas should ideally be of professional quality. So don't hesitate to ask a photographer to capture the subject of your custom paint by numbers. At Figured'Art, we offer you a fine detail upgrade from 24 or 36 colors. However, if you choose a model with 36 colors, you will benefit from a more realistic painting by numbers.
You may decide to give the painting to a loved one as a birthday or Christmas present. It is also possible to decorate a wall by hanging your paint by numbers artwork. Depending on where it will be hung, you can choose the right size canvas with or without a wooden frame.
We offer various sizes of canvas for DIY paint by numbers: 40 × 50 cm, 50 × 65 cm, 60×75 cm, 70×90 cm, 80×100 cm or 80×120 cm and can be in portrait or landscape mode.
Did you choose the optimal photo for your custom paint by numbers? You can now order it on Figured'Art website! We will provide the highest quality materials and accessories for a completely successful painting experience.
This artist invented this revolutionary concept in the 1950s inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, who taught through numbered drawings to his students to train and advance their artistic minds.
How to paint if you are a beginner? The solution: a painting kit with encrypted pots, a canvas to paint with numbers and brushes! That's it!
Dan Robbins had the idea in 1949 when he was working for Palmer Paint Company in Detroit and had plans to find a creative adult entertainment product. The second world war ended, Americans had more time to devote to hobbies and leisure of all kinds.
This phenomenon then experienced a huge boom in the United States and became one of the favorite hobbies of a whole generation.
At that time there were no computers and the creation and production of paint by numbers were then hand made. The first kits were pretty simple with few colors and then became more precise with the addition of multitudes of colors, until what there is today.
This is the first numbered painting by Robbins, called "Abstract No. One" which was a still life. His team later named much more popular and varied models of landscapes.
In the 1950s, more than 20 million paint by number kits were sold each year in the United States.
The art world was not always kind to the paint by number concept, criticizing this method because it then made it possible for any person to create fabulous works.
Celebrities like Andy Warhol, known for his paintings, vigorously supported painting by numbers and was both a fan and a collector.
Dan Robbins was active until the late 1980s and his works are still on display at the Detroit Historical Museum.
Robbins had a simple idea: to make art accessible to all. Figured'Art follows the steps of the creator of painting by numbers to offer you more designs and varieties in all paint by numbers.
Paint by numbers is a method of art and a creative hobby that consists of painting on a pre-printed canvas, broken down into a multitude of numbered areas.
The goal is to paint each numbered area (corresponding to a color) with the associated paint jar, to finally complete a beautiful painting from A to Z.
Over 2000 designs are available on our US website! Figured'Art paint by number kits include all the materials needed to start your painting experience.
YES, you can paint your masterpiece from home! We make it easy for you!
Paint by numbers highlights the fact that a painting is built from multitude of shapes and colors. Separated, they appear quite abstract, but once all are put together, it takes a whole new meaning.
Painting by numbers makes it possible to learn, from a photograph, to clearly identify different zones, the changes of tones and the variations of colors. This is part of the learning method to gradually create beautiful works of art from a blank canvas. By gaining experience, you will become more fluid in your brushstrokes and easily visualize the different areas from any photo.
Specifically, how does Paint by numbers work? Let's look at this numbered design below!
A bit of history about paint by numbers:
Paint by numbers appeared a long time ago. This fun activity was popularized in the 1950s in the United States by artist Dan Robbins, an artist who worked for Max S. Klein's American company Palmer Show Card Paint Co.
On the other hand, Leonard de Vinci was certainly the precursor and the first to model this technique of painting. He is known to have taught painting to his students by numbering some areas of blank canvas to guide his students in choosing the paint colors to use.
Dan Robbins' step was to borrow the basic idea and make the art of painting accessible to all with different designs.
The success was immediate, and Palmer Show Card Co. then developed many paint by number kits for adults.
A Kit contains everything you need to get started:
Once the canvas is unrolled and the pots of paints are near you, how do you proceed? Many people ask this question. It may be tempting to start with an area and try to paint all the surrounding areas in order to finish quickly; However, you have to think about the opening / closing of the paint pots, and the brushes you must rinse with water when changing color etc.
This is why the method we recommend is to paint one color at a time, starting with the largest areas, preferably from the top to the bottom. This will also avoid passing your hand on painted and non-dry areas and many brush cleanings! After the first color, just continue filling the rest of the colors one after the other. Allow one area to dry thoroughly before painting adjacent areas to avoid smudging. Clean the brush after you finish using a color. Do not leave any blank spaces between the areas, everything must be colored. If you have a doubt about the color to use, do not hesitate to refer to the miniature picture of the expected result.
Today, techniques and print quality have evolved and it is now possible to offer many kits of a wide variety.
At Figured'Art you will find a very large choice of adult painting kits that will satisfy all your art needs. Whether you love Japanese paintings, dancing, boats, flowers, landscapes of Provence, animals, or even teddy bears, you will always find an option to satisfy your passion. We also offer options for those who would like to embark on pop art, nude painting or the painting of masterpieces such as Van Gogh's starry night.
We also offer dozens of children's painting kits for which we have selected a whole range of simple, fun and colorful styles.
A beautiful masterpiece mounted on wooden frame!
In addition to this, Figured'Art allows you to discover its custom paint by number kits from your own personal photos. This is how it works: Once we’ve received your selected photo, we use a technique that allows us to analyze the different areas and colors and define the marking of an area on the canvas. After that, we continue with the printing on canvas and the creation of the pots of paints corresponding to the necessary colors.
Whether you want to spend a moment of relaxation alone or with your children, or brighten up your walls by customizing the decoration of your home, enjoy by discovering the experience of our paint by numbers and experience a real moment of pleasure.
Take your time, and enjoy the moment … you are now an artist!
I had never painted either! Painting by numbers is an excellent way to get into art without experience. It is a crafting hobby that anyone can start, there is clearly no age limit. Young people and seniors do it (Info Figured'Art: we have clients over 90 years old who practice painting by numbers every day).
This creative leisure activity is relaxing, it allows you to find inner peace while developing your creativity. If I could do it, believe me, you can too!
The canvases are numbered in accordance with the numbering of the small paint pots. (for example, the color of pot number 5 should be applied to all areas of the canvas with the number 5)
You see? Nothing very complicated!
My wife introduced me to paint by numbers. I started with very simple models which allowed me to learn progressively without getting discouraged. On each collection page on figuredart.com, you can filter by level of difficulty:
I highly recommend, if you are a beginner, choosing "Easy" designs, at least for your first 2 paintings by numbers. As with any activity, it is important to learn gradually. This will prepare you to paint more complex works in the future.
No need to use anything before starting to paint. No mixing necessary for the paint pots. If you want to give a little more fluidity to certain paintings you can add a drop of water (really no more).
The 3 brushes are enough. Personally, I don't buy my own brushes, I use the ones provided in each Figured'Art paint by numbers kit and it works very well for me.
Make sure the canvas is placed on a flat surface and that the paint pots are within reach to start well. Also have a glass of water available to easily clean your brushes when changing colors.
Take a glass of water to easily clean your brush. Clean the brush after you have finished using a color. The use of a cloth will be welcome to dry the brush after cleaning it. Do not skip these crucial steps as they will allow you to achieve precise and vibrant colors for your canvases!
A good cleaning of your brush for a sparkling paint by numbers!
If you are painting on a rolled canvas, I suggest working on a table with all the paint by number accessories included in your kit within reach. You can also put your canvas on a cardboard surface and tape the edges so it is flat and wrinkle-free. Keep in mind that you can iron your canvas before starting to paint (on the back, not on the printed surface) to remove any small wrinkles.
For your information, you also have precision magnifying glasses that are useful for not straining your eyes during your creations. There are regularly small areas to be done allowing an exceptional result in the end.
To avoid constantly cleaning your brushes, I suggest doing one color and one area at a time. Start at one end and complete all the areas of a specific number. For large areas to paint, start by painting the intersections and then fill them in completely. When you have finished painting a specific color, clean your brushes and move on to the next area. Each kit contains 3 brushes, for small areas use the smallest brush and for large areas the larger brushes are perfect.
Don't rush. When you start painting your paint by numbers, be comfortably seated and if possible, without distraction. On my end, I usually paint during 2-hour sessions. For people with a very active lifestyle, this activity is recommended in the evening and on weekends, it will put you in the perfect situation to relax and clear your mind. For me, it's a lot like meditation through art. Clearly all the bad stress and accumulated fatigue disappear after some time.
It takes time to make the complete work appear and it's often a magical moment to see your painting come to life. Don't hesitate to step back and visually see what you're doing, it will motivate you even more.
I completed over 30 paintings over a period of 12 months. Without even realizing it, I became more and more skilled with my brushes. If you start with simple paintings and gradually start trying to paint more complicated works, it will happen naturally.
I have completed paint by numbers of all sizes. To start, the standard 16"x20" canvases are perfect. Personally, with experience, I like to complete large formats. If you have vision problems, large sizes are also ideal because the areas to paint are larger, although it takes more time to complete.
Typically, you can follow the numbers indicated on paint by number canvases closely, at least on your first few creations. Of course, you are free to innovate and particularly if you wish to soften color demarcations. You can try the "Zig Zag" technique, which involves painting the edges of two areas to blend colors and make the color change appear more natural.
Always let the paint dry before applying another layer in the same area. The canvas gradually absorbs the paint, so it's necessary to wait and see how the paint looks once it's dry, and only add another layer if necessary. Sometimes for light colors, the numbers may still be visible, so adding another layer will make them disappear.
Personally, the color that I find the most difficult to work with is, oddly, red. I often have to apply multiple layers.
I like to have a unique style for my paintings, so it depends on personal preference. Generally, I paint my canvases first without frame and then have them framed by a local artisan. But you can also buy canvases that are already stretched on wooden frames (super nice and ideal to give as a gift) if you want a 100% ready-to-paint kit. If you plan to hang your canvas directly with the wooden frame, you have the option of painting the margins of the canvas with the colors of the nearby areas. This will give a unique touch to your paintings and avoid the edges being white.
Not mandatory but I still recommend it, add a coat of varnish with a solution like Liquitex. Very easy to apply, it only takes 2 minutes and it will preserve your paintings for decades while keeping the colors bright.
Beyond the level of difficulty, choose models that you like. Art is personal, we all have different tastes, and I'm sure that like me you will find models that appeal to you by looking at the Figured'Art collection.

Paint by number as a miracle cure to fight against stress?
In everyday life, most of us experience stress, some more than others. Stress at work, health concerns, problems in our relationships … how can we escape?
Specialists offer two methods to get away from your daily worries: meditation and hyper-concentration; both perfectly match the creative activity of paint by numbers.
This is why, for several years now, there has been a real boom in relaxation through art and numbered paintings in general. Some therapists describe paint by number as an art therapy.
Let's do a quick reminder: meditation frees and soothes your mind by emptying your thinking process for a moment. Do you realize that you no longer took the time to let your imagination run wild?
Since the start of smartphones our attention has dropped sharply, we are constantly busy with our digital devices, and we are losing our ability to step back and get out of this infernal spiral of an ultra connected world. It strongly affects our emotions and our ability to make the right decisions to achieve happiness.
In addition, we often hear about productivity, how to save time by "multi-tasking", but the human brain was not built this way. This causes an emotional overload that deprives you of your freedom of thought. So take action and regain control now!
The second technique to eliminate bad stress, but also to strongly develop your concentration skills, is called hyper-concentration.
This consists of focusing 100% on the completion of a task for a defined period of time, without any distractions (telephone, TV, etc.) which corresponds perfectly to the manual activity of paint by number. A total concentration with a guided method that allows you to arrive at a very nice result.
Maybe you are aware that your mind is having trouble concentrating? It may seem difficult at first, because your brain is no longer used to this hyper-concentration, but little by little with a little effort and patience the results are incredible and radically change your day-to-day mood…
And what's better than paint by numbers to practice this hyper-concentration? A fun method, where you master the process from A to Z with the painting of each numbered box. Live the experience thoroughly, move forward by focusing completely on painting, each stroke with your brush, each color change to finally achieve a magnificent work. Feel the emotions that each movement brings you, each little step that brings you closer to the final goal.
Painting by number makes it possible to take time for oneself, it’s a form of art and creative leisure which reduces the level of anxiety and brings inner peace by promoting positive emotions. Art is at the service of well-being.
The method of paint by number does not require knowledge from a technical point of view, no need to know how to paint, that is why it’s accessible to all, for all tastes with an extremely varied choice of paintings to make. It allows you to develop two essential qualities to live in harmony with yourself: Patience and concentration. In life nothing happens in a second, you have to appreciate the process, not just the end result, experience the pleasure of seeing your canvas take shape and become a real work of art.
